District Progression in Bus Simulator 27
District Points, unlocks, Story mode progression, and why Career mode gives you the full map from the start.
Felicia Bay has 20 districts across two cities. You do not start with access to all of them. Official documentation confirms that Story mode uses a progression system based on District Points: you earn these points by completing routes and assigned contracts, then spend them to unlock new districts and their bus stops. This page explains the progression loop, how it differs from Career and Sandbox, and what unlocks you can expect as you build your company.
How District Points work
District Points are earned through Story mode activity. Every contract, every completed route, and every test the characters assign contributes to your point total. The exact rate of earning — points per route, points per contract — has not been published in a table, but the principle is consistent: play Story, accumulate points, spend points on map access.
Spending points on a district unlocks all bus stops within that district. Once a district is unlocked, its stops become available for route creation in Story mode and for free use in Career and Sandbox. Unlocking is permanent within a save file; you do not re-earn access to a district you have already opened.
What unlocking a district gives you
Unlocking a district opens its bus stops for your routes. In Story mode, this is the primary expansion mechanic: you cannot service a district until you have paid the District Points cost. In Career mode, all districts are available from the start, which means Career players skip this particular progression gate entirely.
Each district has its own bus stop inventory. Some are simple end-of-line terminals; others are mid-route pickups with multiple platform configurations. The game describes the map as having more than 250 bus stops total across the 20 districts, which means the average district contains roughly 12 to 15 stops.
Story mode progression path
The Story campaign introduces districts in sequence. Early Story contracts stay within Mequina, the coastal city where the tutorial and first City Drive are set. As you accumulate District Points and complete more assignments, the game opens districts with different characteristics: urban Mequina districts, the connecting road infrastructure, and eventually the Alcaztelar mountain city districts on the far side of the region.
This sequenced unlock means early Story routes are Mequina-only. Coach routes between Mequina and Alcaztelar appear later in the progression, which mirrors the Tourismo demo experience as an aspirational goal rather than a starting option.
Landmarks and collectibles are tied to district access. A point of interest in a locked district cannot be reached on foot or by passing it on a route. As districts unlock, the collectible map expands.
Career and Sandbox: no District Point gate
Career mode opens the full map from the first save. You start with limited money, not limited districts. This is the practical difference between Story and Career: Story is gated by a progression system, Career is gated by economics. In Career you can drive to Alcaztelar on day one if you can afford the coach and the fuel.
Sandbox mode removes both gates. Districts are unlocked and money is unlimited. The progression system is absent, which makes Sandbox the appropriate mode for players who want to explore the full map without working through Story contracts.
District Points versus Brand Points
There are two progression currencies in the game. District Points open map access. Brand Points — earned separately — unlock new bus manufacturers and their models. A district can be unlocked while the brands needed to service it remain locked. This creates a scenario where you own the road but not yet the right vehicle for it.
Brand Point costs vary by manufacturer. The exact costs per brand and the number of models per brand have not been published in full as of launch. The fleet hub covers the confirmed manufacturers and models that are publicly known.
Progression and multiplayer
In co-op Story mode, each player’s progression is individual. Your partner’s unlocked districts do not transfer to your save. If you start a co-op Story session, both players need their own district access to service stops in locked areas.
In co-op Career or Sandbox, this is not a concern: Career starts fully open and Sandbox removes gates entirely. Co-op groups who want to explore the map together without Story progression friction should use Career or Sandbox rather than Story.
Practical notes for your first Story save
Prioritize completing routes over driving fast. District Points are earned per completed contract, not per kilometre. A slow, clean run that finishes the assignment generates more progress than a fast run that fails the contract conditions.
Keep one or two districts partially serviced while you accumulate points for the next unlock. A small network that runs reliably generates points consistently. An overextended network with gaps generates complaints and maintenance problems.
If you are playing co-op in Story, agree on which player hosts the main save and whether the partner is running a parallel save or riding along. The two-save approach lets a co-op partner experience full Story progression on their own file while the host’s company runs the network.
