Bus Simulator 27 Game Modes
Story for guided contracts, Career for company money, Sandbox when you only want the cab and the map.
Bus Simulator 27 ships three playlists, not one blended save. Official copy names them Story, Career, and Sandbox. All three can be played solo or in 4-player online co-op with crossplay. The Steam demo (app 4311090) is a guided slice with locked menu tiles. Treat that slice as a cab exam, not as proof of how Career money or Sandbox collectibles will feel after the 8 September 2026 full launch.
Year 1 Edition Advance Access starts 3 September 2026. Standard owners wait for 8 September. Until the full game is in your library, do not expect to switch freely between the three modes the way a finished company sim would.
Story
Xbox Wire and astragon’s own pages describe Story as the guided rebuild. You meet characters who hand out contracts and challenges while you restore public transport after a scandal that wrecked the previous authority. Demo footage and first-look videos pick up that thread: buses returning to Felicia Bay after years of mismanagement, a talkative handler on the radio, and a first City Drive sold as a test for the city council.
Play Story if you want a reason to take the next line besides profit. It is the mode Getting Started recommends when you do not yet know the cab. It is also the mode that will lean on in-bus events and passenger care, so pair it with how to drive and roles.
Story is not a film you watch from the depot. You still log into the bus computer, hit stops, and keep a timetable. The difference is who assigns the work. For a longer narrative walkthrough, use the Story mode guide.
Career
Career is the economic and managerial playlist. Official text says you build the empire to your liking: create routes, watch peak times and passenger volume, buy buses that match urban or interurban work, hire drivers, assign lines, and add wraps or ads for extra income. That is the same toolkit as company management, only with money and reputation actually counting.
Career is the mode for players who already know doors and drive mode from the demo and want the route creator. It is not the demo. Locked tiles in the Next Fest build are the reminder. When Career opens, start with one city line in Mequina before you fund a coach toward Alcaztelar. Fleet choice still matters: city buses, coaches, and electric or hydrogen models are different cost centers, not skins.
Sandbox
Sandbox is the playground with money and rules turned down. Official copy says you can drive a favorite bus or walk Felicia Bay for points of interest and hidden collectibles. Use it to learn a new coach body, to hunt landmarks on foot, or to test a wheel curve without a timetable yelling at you.
Sandbox is not “the real game with cheats.” Career still owns the company loop. Story still owns the characters. If you only ever play Sandbox, you will miss hiring, ads, and contract pressure. If you never touch Sandbox, you will miss the quiet landmark hunt Xbox Wire describes: collect icons by passing them on a route or by walking up to them.
What every mode still shares
Driving, traffic events, in-bus events, and the three roles (driver, inspector, passenger) are not locked to one playlist. You can leave the cab and walk in all of them according to official feature lists. Co-op is available across modes. PC mod.io support is a platform feature, not a Story-only toggle.
The map is the same Felicia Bay: coastal Mequina, Alcaztelar between mountain ranges, 20 districts, day/night, dynamic weather. Coach work still needs the longer roads described in coach routes. Graphics and wheels still follow the tools hub.
How to choose before 8 September
If you only have the demo, you do not choose. You run the tutorial, the Mequina city line, and the Tourismo legs. After Advance Access or full launch:
- Start Story for one evening if you want the scandal plot and a handler on the radio.
- Move to Career when you are ready to spend company money on a second bus.
- Keep Sandbox for landmark walks, wheel testing, and “just drive the Irizar.”
Do not create three overlapping companies unless you enjoy bookkeeping. One Career save plus a Sandbox toy save is enough for most groups. Co-op friends should agree on the playlist before anyone hosts, because a Story contract and a Sandbox joyride are not the same session.
